CRBSI prevention

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is defined as the presence of bacteremia originating from an intravenous catheter.

• Accounts for 10~20% of in-hospital acquired infections

• Mortality rate:~35%

• Increased medical expense: $4k-39K per case, 2-10bn annually in US

• Not reimbursable by Medicare & Medicaid

• Developing countries: Infection rate is 2-10 times higher

• Most CRBSI originates from skin infection around the insertion site
